Typically, the system is calibrated with narrow standards such as the nine shown here (3 injections of 3 standards each). This is an example from Waters, in which Polystyrene standards with a MW range from 2.89 million to 2980 were used for the  calibration. With the system calibrated it is now ready to analyze broad MW samples.
