The Blossoming CactusShulamit
Malchi-Levin, Hadera 2003, Israel.
Small,
humble cactus, self-hidden,
defensive,
protects itself.
Thorns
keep it safe
in
its thick shell, getting ready.
Slowly emerges a hesitant twig, as
a hint for the glory of the happening.
growing,
swelling, roughening;
sending
stalks and hops.
From the edge of the thorny cylinder emerges
the elegant flowery structure.
creation
of the demanding nature
breathtaking
and magnificent.
For a day or two will be glorified. The
cactus' modesty will be masked.
Against
the world will proud itself
will
not have mercy on its thorny bed
Then, at once without any preparation the
flower withdraws into itself wrinkled,
withers
into its mount,
disappears,
bends its dead head.
And the cactus returns to routine, rounded
hairy and thorny.
Again,
protective in its gray dress
from
the hardships of the aggressive world.
